The Resurgence of Fall Out Boy

 

Fall Out Boy’s So Much (for) Stardust  is the band’s most artistic piece of work to date. The album is the most theatrical and impactful album you will listen to. “Love from the Other Side” prepares you for the journey the band takes you on for forty-four minutes.

 

I have been a fan of FOB since “Calm Before the Storm” played on Fuse.  The band’s quick jump to superstardom did not deter them from recording quirky songs like, “I Slept with Someone in Fall Out Boy and All I got was this Stupid Song Written About Me,” maintaining the sound their long-standing fans adored, and reaching the masses with songs like “Dance, Dance” and “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race.”

 

The band leads the pack in reviving the scene with mature lyrics and proving that they are one of the best rock bands around. Blessing the airwaves for twenty years, the band has provided their fans with anthems that healed our hearts and left us begging for more. Their carefully crafted lyrics have been used as the soundtrack to our lives and this album is no exception.

 

Fall Out Boy leaves everything on the table with So Much (for) Stardust. Every lyric, note, harmony, guitar riff, drum stroke is perfect. The resurgence of the band leaves this “secret emo” (like my partner likes to say) hopeful for more impactful albums from bands that dominated the airwaves alongside Fall Out Boy. 

In May, Yellowcard released “Childhood Eyes.” The band most famously known for “Ocean Avenue” provides those of us who were obsessed with them a taste of what they have to offer. Their album is set to be released in a few days, which I am excited for. On Friday, Taking Back Sunday released their latest single, “The One” that is on brand for the emo band. This leads me to believe that new music is on the horizon for TBS.

Leading the pack with successful albums, it is looking to be a summer filled with guitar riffs and singing at the top of my lungs. Kicking off summer is Fall Out Boy’s concert I attended last Monday at BMO stadium.  I am not going to pretend that I did not squeal when I found out The Academy Is… was going to open for them!

 

When we arrived, The Academy Is… was already performing. Let me begin by saying that William Beckett, Jr. has gone from a hot emo kid to a hot hipster dad. I had not been keeping up with the band since 2008, so it was a pleasant surprise that they were one of the opening acts for Fall Out Boy.  It was a walk down memory lane rocking out to the band’s hits and being amongst people who have an appreciation for their music.

Bring Me the Horizon helped open as well. Oli Sykes, lead singer, is an amazing showman. I have never been a big fan of screamo rock bands. Back in my college years, I worked at Spencer’s Gifts and am familiar with the band. My jaw dropped at how amazing Bring Me the Horizon was. At one point, Oli jumped into the crowd and did a lap around the GA pit, bringing his presence closer to those in the back. From the beginning to the end of their set, the crowd was on their feet rocking out. To say the least, the band was a great opener. The energy was high, and the crowd was ready to rock out.

 

 

Opening their set with Love from the Other Side from their latest album, Fall Out Boy did not disappoint. The powerhouse rock band played for two hours and put on one of the best performances I have ever witnessed. You are immediately hit with a wave of adrenaline and the tempo does not stop.

  

 

The twenty-nine song setlist was the best of Fall Out Boy. Dating back to songs from Take This to Your Grave to their most recent album. You are taken down memory lane and reminded of their talent. During the show, Patrick does an acoustic set of cover songs. I have to say this: Patrick’s voice is fucking phenomenal!

 

 

I have been to several rock shows in the past few years and Fall Out Boy’s show is one of the best, if not the best show I have been to. You can tell that they love what they do and put on an exquisite show. If you have not done so, I recommend you buy tickets if they are playing in a city near you.

 

 

After two hours of bliss, the band ended their show with one of my favorites, Saturday from their 2003 album Take This to Your Grave. Two hours was not enough, selfishly I wanted them to come out and do an encore, but they did not.
